Croeso / Welcome!

Welcome to Talygarn Manor and Country Park (TMCP), once the home of one of Wales’s foremost public figures, now a community of around 200 residents.

There’s been a house on the Talygarn site since the 13th century, and a succession of owners – including the Reverend Lisle, Rector of St Fagans, an expert on poisons who kept a snake pit here.

At its heart is a 19th century Grade II listed building, constructed for a dynasty of landowners and decorated by Venetian craftsmen, which looks out over sunken gardens, lawns, lake and woodland to the green South Wales countryside beyond.

When George T Clark bought the house in 1865, he described it as ‘a quiet, modest structure… a queer, rambling sort of house.’ It did not stay modest for long – Clark lavished money on rebuilding the house and grounds, intent on setting up a home for himself and his descendants. Soon the house was the stateliest for many miles around.

But the dynasty for whom it was to be a home did not last…
